d play in my iTunes, and Fall Out Boy's Folie À Deux came on, and I thought "Fall Out Boy sucks!" because I had heard it all day. But then I realized that I was simply part of a reactionary and conformist viewpoint, and that Fall Out Boy doesn't actually suck, and that they released one of the best albums of 2008.
From the ragtime rock of "20 Dollar Nose Bleed" to the Kanye-friendly "Tiffany Blews" to the irresistible classic-rock style of lead single "I Don't Care", Fall Out Boy crafts the perfect pop songs. They are influenced by the band's 3 former albums, all of which were solid in their own rights and generated a handful of huge hits, making the band one of the best love/hate relationships in America. But they're also influenced by sundry other styles and musicians, and each band member has evolved amazingly - Pete Wentz's lyrics are better than ever, Patrick Stump has become a premier rock singer and producer, and Andy Hurley's drumming is unmatched in modern pop music.
The songs make seamless transitions (second single "America's Suithearts" to "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet", an amazing achievement in music) and are punctuated by gospel-style-ending ("w.a.m.s.") and Wentz's emo poetry ("20 Dollar Nose Bleed"). The beautiful ballad is there ("What A Catch, Donnie"), and so are the introspective lyrics ("no one wants to hear you sing about tragedy", from "Disloyal Order Of Water Buffaloes"). If there's a problem with this album, it's that it doesn't let up, and everytime I listen to one song I want to hear the whole thing.
